gum-recession-surgery-rockwall-txWe are pleased to announce that Dr. Beirute-Prada and our team is one of the few certified dental teams in the Dallas area (and the State of Texas) that provide this revolutionary treatment for receding gums, the Pinhole Surgical Technique™ (PST).

Benefits of the PST

• Most patients see the results same day or near immediate results.
• Likewise, recovery from the surgery is very fast, usually no more than one day.
• Because the PST requires no cuts or stitches, discomfort during recovery is far less.
• Dr. Beirute-Prada uses no scalpels or cuts during the procedure.
• The PST does not require that tissue be taken from other parts of the mouth.
• The restored tissue is natural looking.
• The results are long lasting.

What is the Pinhole Technique?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is a modern approach to tissue grafting to restore receding gums. Unlike traditional tissue grafts, PST requires no cuts, no stitches and no tissue from your palate to address the gum recession (typically, conventional gum grafting requires that a periodontist remove tissue from the palate to replace the lost gum tissue). In most cases, the procedure takes less than 1 hour, and because it is minimally invasive, patients are able to resume their normal routines faster than with conventional gum grafting.

Using the PST, Dr. Beirute-Prada creates a tiny access in the area close to the receding gums and then uses specialized instruments to gently expand the gum tissue. The loosened gum tissue can easily expand to cover the exposed root structure.

If you take good care of your gums after undergoing this procedure, and follow-up with Dr. Beirute-Prada as recommended, the results of the Pinhole Surgical Technique can be long-lasting.

Advanced periodontal disease that results in the loss of gum tissue is a serious condition and it must be treated effectively to protect your oral health. If receding gums are detracting from your smile and leading to other issues like tooth sensitivity or decay below the gumline, consider the PST as an option for treatment without an invasive procedure.

Common Questions

What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique™?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is an innovative approach to gum recession that requires no incisions, sutures or stitches. A small hole is made in the gum tissue, and specialized instruments are then used to pull healthy gum tissue over to cover the area of gum recession. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is minimally disruptive to patients’ lives. This procedure can be completed in an hour or two, and most patients are able to resume normal activities within the next day. Additionally, post-operative symptoms like swelling and discomfort are usually kept to a minimum.

What causes gum recession?

A number of factors can contribute to the loss of gum tissue. Periodontitis (advanced gum disease) can cause gum recession as the bacteria attack the gum tissue and cause inflammation. Excessively aggressive brushing technique can also lead to the erosion of gum tissue. Genetics, bruxism (tooth grinding), hormonal changes or injury to the gums also can cause or contribute to gum recession.

How do I know if I have receding gums?

Most people will recognize receding gums on sight. Your teeth will look longer as the gum tissue covering the top portion of the tooth shrinks. If the gum recession is severe enough, you may even be able to see a part of the tooth’s root. Other symptoms of receding gums can include loose teeth and sensitivity. You also may notice persistent bad breath due to bacteria buildup.

How much does gum grafting cost?

Gum grafting is a potential solution for gum recession, and some portion of the cost may be covered by insurance. The cost of this treatment will vary from patient to patient and is dependent on factors such as the severity of the condition and the technique used in the gum graft. Our staff will discuss anticipated costs with you at your evaluation and educate you on the numerous financing options offered by our practice.
